The Most Exciting Game I Never Played

Groton girls varsity basketball beats AA team the second game of the season!
Last Wednesday, the Groton girls varsity basketball team took on Rivers. In recent history, they are the first class B team to beat a AA school. From the first whistle, it was an electric night. Katie Resendez (Captain, '22) gave Groton an early lead by scoring the first nine points for Groton. From that point onward, Rivers was on their heels. They had clearly walked into the gym thinking it would be an easy win, but Groton was determined to put up a fight. I could not play due to injuries, but sitting on the bench was just as exciting. Every single player, both on and off the court, was completely locked in. The enthusiasm from Groton players and coaches was palpable as the game continued. Our excitement (and stress) grew exponentially as the game progressed. However, our girls held their own and kept the lead for the entirety of the game.

At halftime, Coach Crail told us he had never seen a team play so cohesively so early in the season, especially since we lost last season due to COVID. After only three practices and a game, they were already playing like they had a full season under their belt.

As the clock counted down the minutes until the final whistle, Groton held firm. The third quarter proved to be a little rough, and it seemed for a second as if Rivers might finally take the lead. But before they could gather too much momentum, Groton fired back. In the fourth quarter, we took an eight-point lead to twenty points, finishing the game at an astounding 51 to 29.

When the buzzer finally sounded, we rushed the court to embrace our very sweaty teammates who had worked so hard for this win. The cheers from parents in the stands were some of the loudest I've heard. It was truly awesome. And although I regret not being able to play, I am beyond proud of what they accomplished, and so thankful to have been there to share in the joy!
